“During the first year of the COVID epidemic I was inspired to create a series of paintings on female healers, orishas, shamans, and deities representing various cultures of the world. Each one that I painted was endearing to me, but Magu captivated me and she graces a prominent wall in my bedchamber.
I painted Magu - on canvas with acrylic paints - standing in front of a field of hemp plants as the young maiden that she is described as in countries all over Asia. Her name is Chinese and combines the words *ma* for maiden and *gu* for hemp. Magu, also known as the Hemp Maiden, used the plant for healing and she is the symbolic protector of women.
